Hawaii Arrival & Departure Info
HAWAII FACILITATORS’ PLAYSHOP 2023
August 24-30, 2023
— Arrival & Departure Information —
ARRIVAL: Thursday AUG 24
Participants will be arriving into the Honolulu airport on the island of Oahu by 2:00pm on Thursday, August 24th. Please schedule your arrival time no later than 2:00pm in order to avoid missing our shuttle bus to camp, which leaves at 3:30pm from Ke’Ehi Lagoon Park, near the airport. You will pick up your baggage at the airport and get a taxi to Ke’Ehi Lagoon Park (see directions below).
We recommend that you consider arriving a day or two early, particularly if you are coming from far away. There are plenty of budget hotels in Waikiki by the beach (see below). You can use the link below to connect with other facilitators who are arriving early and may want to share lodging and fun with you. Join our private Hawaii 2023 Facebook Group and connect with fellow facilitators.
Please see the Hawaii Playshop Schedule 2023 for planning your Playshop week.
Meeting at Ke’ehi Lagoon Park
VMC will be at Ke’Ehi Lagoon Beach Park to greet you between 2:30-3:30pm on Thursday, August 24th. We will be waiting for you with beverages, light snacks and drums. Introductions, orientation, drumming and making new friends will start here.
Directions: If you are coming from Waikiki, you can have your hotel shuttle drop you off at the airport and take a Taxi or Uber to the park, or meet up and share with your new Playshop friends. Ke’Ehi Lagoon Park is less than a mile from the airport (for $15-20/USD).
Important: Have driver drop you off at the Park ‘Round About’ by the restrooms at the end of the road in the park. Tell your taxi driver to go inside the park, past the parking lots, to the traffic round-about and restrooms at the end of the road. Don't let him drop you off at the entrance of the park. It's a long road with luggage! See Map of Ke'Ehi Lagoon Park.
BUS to Camp: Don’t miss our complimentary shuttle bus to Camp Mokuleia, which departs Ke’Ehi Lagoon Park PROMPTLY at 3:30pm. If you miss the bus for any reason, you will need to take a Taxi or Uber to camp which could cost $60-100. It is also customary to tip the bus drivers at least one US dollar for each leg of your trip.
If you know you will be late that day, please call us! (in this order…)

Honolulu Hotels
Waikiki is the hotel district that we recommend you research when looking for a room. In the past, participants have found hotels on the EAST/SOUTH (Diamond Head) side of Waikiki. This allows us all to be within walking distance! When looking at the map in the link below, the East/South (Diamond Head) side of Waikiki is in or near the blue or yellow sections of the map. This section of Waikiki is where participants typically meet after the program, and has a more casual beach vibe than the more glitzy west side. Try not to get too much farther north than Kuhio Street. Many facilitators have stayed at the Queen Kapiolani. It is rather inexpensive, if not a bit funky, regular rooms are fine but nothing special, and it has a good location. The top floor has 1 bedroom suites, which are good for sharing with several others. Budget Hotels in Waikiki.
Waikiki Beach Meet-Up
Before and after the Playshop, you and your new friends can meet up for social time. In past Playshops we stake out the grassy knoll to the left of the Duke statue for meeting up and hanging out. Come meet up with others looking for something to do. Or bring your towel and beach mat, and just hang out in the shade and take a swim every now and then. Here is a link to the famous Duke Kahanamoku Statue at the public beach at Kuhio Beach Park, on Kalakaua Ave in Waikiki. That’s the Duke, standing in front of a giant surfboard. Come meet up in Waikiki before or after the Playshop!
